Adventures in Volunteer Teaching

To help me with my Peace Corps application I've been advised by my recruiter that I should try to get at least 30 hours of experience teaching ESL. In San Francisco that shouldn't be too hard... we are a city of immigrants, aren't we?

It turns out the hardest part is not finding volunteer opportunities; it is narrowing them down. Using the web site Serve.gov I came up with a list as long as both arms. Fortunately, both of the first two places I emailed got back to me immediately and I set up an interview last week with Arriba Juntos, as I mentioned in a previous post. The interview was very short and I was asked to come back a couple of days later and meet their primary tutor, who was also very helpful.

Long story short is that I start tutoring tomorrow, Wednesday, with a class. I'm nervous and excited and hope I don't screw it up.
